NEW PURCHASE OR LEASE
You have 60 days from date of purchase or lease to register your vehicle without penalties.

MOVED TO KANSAS
You have 90 days from the date of establishment of residence to register your vehicle in Kansas.

TRANSFERRING PLATES
Old vehicles must be sold before or within 60 days of new purchase in order to transfer plates.

REFUNDS
If you sell a vehicle before the expiration date, you may be eligible for a refund. You will need the current registration, the plate, and the name of the purchaser to receive your refund.  You will also be required to furnish your social security number.

If you move out of state, you may be eligible for a property tax refund.  You will need the current registration, the plate, a copy of the out-of-state registration and a copy of your out-of-state drivers license.

WHAT TO BRING

PROOF OF INSURANCE 

Effective January 1, 2000, everyone is required to show proof of insurance on all motor vehicle transactions. This proof MUST show all of the following:

  • Company name
  • Policy number
  • Effective and expiration dates
  • The vehicle information:  Year, make and VIN

IF YOU HAVEN’T RECEIVED PROOF FROM YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY, PLEASE CALL THEM AND HAVE THEM FAX A COPY TO US AT 620-374-2771.

SALES TAX RECEIPT, DEALER INVOICE OR BILL OF SALE

If you purchase a vehicle from a Kansas dealer, they will furnish you with a sales tax receipt. 
If you purchase a vehicle from an out-of-state dealer, they must furnish you with a dealer invoice showing purchase price and trade-in amount if applicable. 
If you purchase a vehicle from an individual, they must furnish you with a separate bill of sale if there is not a place on the title for the purchase price. It must show the year, make, purchase price, date of purchase, VIN on the vehicle and the seller's signature. 


THE TITLE

If your purchase is brand new, the dealer will furnish you with a manufacturer's statement of origin (MSO).
If your purchase is from an individual, they must furnish you with a title issued to them.
If your title is being held by a lien holder in another state, they must fax us a copy of the front AND back of the title.  (620-374-2771)
VIN inspections are required on all out-of-state titles (except MSO’S). Please contact the Elk County Sheriff's office at 620-374-2108 to schedule an inspection. The cost is $20.00 per vehicle.

PROPERTY TAXES

Cars, 12M trucks & RVs:  Property taxes are paid at the time of registration.
